Q/A WITH MISUN:
AFA: Tell us about your most memorable experience as a flight attendant…
MISUN: “Too many, but the first year of flying we had an emergency layover in a small pacific island due to a typhoon. During the island tour, a local young man handed me a whole plant as a welcoming gift. I thought that was very sweet but the whole crew laughed so hard. I didn’t realize that it was a marijuana plant. “
AFA: When someone encounters your work for the first time – what do you hope they will grasp or enjoy about the paintings?
MISUN: “I hope viewers to want to place themselves in my paintings. I want people to feel the warm light coming down through the trees while they walk through the scene.”
AFA: Do you ever have days when you feel like you just can’t create, but need to? How do you overcome that obstacle?
MISUN: “I like to go to beach and stare at the ocean or trees for a while. It helps to refresh the creative side of my brain.”
AFA: What do you think is your spirit animal and why?
MISUN: “I want the joyful dolphin as my spirit animal. Dolphins symbolize peace and harmony, inner strength, protection, and playfulness.”
AFA: Please explain your style of painting and why you chose that path…
MISUN: “My style is impressionistic with many layers of short strokes. I use the impasto technique with oil and palette knives to build thick, buttery paint on canvas. I can be more expressive, depicting light and color intensely. The texture provides a three-dimensional feel.”
AFA: What type of music do you listen to while you paint?
MISUN: “Depending on the subject, I usually listen to Bossanova, Jazz, a little bit of rock and Hawaiian.”
AFA: If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing with your life?
MISUN: “I would like to own a private island resort with a coffee farm.”
AFA: If you were an animated character, who would you be and why?
MISUN: “People who had a hard time remembering my name used to call me Mulan. I didn’t mind because the brave princess rescued the prince, unlike most stories.”
AFA: Who are you art heroes?
MISUN: “Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Signac, and David Hockney.”
AFA: What piece of art from the current Adelman collection would you buy for yourself?
MISUN: “Shattered by Iris Scott”
