“‘There was a big blank 60x40 wood panel staring me in the face for a long time in the studio. I didn’t know what to paint on it. I hadn’t painted that big in a while and it would have to be something powerful to match the size. I had been painting a lot of bears and wanted to change it up, so I started sketching tiger faces. A lot of them. It takes a while to be able to figure out how to paint a new animal in my style. It has to be digested and regurgitated in my sketchbook many times to finally figure out how to translate it. I’m drawn to large powerful animals. They absolutely scare the crap out of me. When I paint one, it’s my way of showing respect to these awesome creatures.” ~ Erik Abel
