“The inspiration for my sea scapes comes directly from the joy that surfing and the ocean has given me since I was a child. It comes from searching for those perfect waves on my travels around the world and here at home. I create scenes from no place in particular. They are a mash up of little elements from dreamy, idyllic locations I have seen or dream of seeing. Happy visions. Most importantly, painting the ocean is just a way for me to disappear from reality for a while, be present in the moment, and just do what I love to do.
As for my animals, I have always been drawn to various ancient and native art where powerful animals and gods are statuesque and symbolic, looking head on. Lately, North American wildlife have had me interested. It’s because I live here. There is a deeper connection to them knowing that they are literally in my back yard. I see elk on the side of the road all the time here in the Pacific Northwest. I saw a large shark fin in front of me while surfing last year. There are bear and cougar around as well. Painting animals is a way to show my respect to these amazing beasts.” ~ Erik Abel
