This piece is inspired by the integration of shadow—the rich darkness within—and the bright light of awareness, our true nature. One informs the other, moving together in an endless dance of experience. As we embrace both, we become more fully integrated human beings, opening ourselves to a deeper, more embodied way of living.
My work is often compared to psychedelic experiences—like looking through a multidimensional lens of color and movement beyond normal waking life, yet still deeply connected to it. When people ask if I painted under the influence of psychedelics, my response is always no. However, I wholeheartedly support the use of sacred medicines in the right set and setting, with proper guidance. They have the potential to awaken us to our true nature and reveal the deeper fabric of reality.
That said, I often remind people that on a subatomic level, everything is vibrating, moving, and infused with life force. This becomes more apparent when we are fully present. Have you ever stood before an awe-inspiring vista, emerged from deep meditation, or had an experience that pulled you completely into the moment? In those times, you feel alive, connected—present.
While I don’t typically describe my paintings as “psychedelic,” this particular piece undeniably carries that energy. Standing in front of it, painting it, feeling the movement of groovy, contorted shapes shifting in and out of existence—it truly feels like a psychedelic journey. ~Grant
