Born and raised in Canada, Jan Lord studied art from the time she was in Grade School. During her childhood, she could be seen painting during the summer months in the beautiful parks in Vancouver, B.C. Throughout her career, she has studied under a variety of Canadian and American watercolor and acrylic artists.
Jan has found her total and unique style through many great instructors. Her techniques include acrylic and oil pastels, glazing, and adding a variety of elements such as aluminum, graphite, paper, iron, nuts and bolts.
Jan’s art can be found in numerous private and corporate collections.
Jan’s true inspiration comes from music. The rhythm and words will have an emotional effect and transmit into the art. Forms and shapes of people will also appear. Her abstract work is known for its layered color fields and textured surfaces. She specializes in working with oils, acrylics, charcoal, graphite and mixed media on wood panels.

Her Art is Worth a Thousand Lyrics
For Jan Lord, music is more than a pleasurable pastime; it’s the inspiration behind her artwork.
Each painting, expressionist at its core, integrates not only the tone or mood of a favorite song, but meaningful lyrics that remind her of the beautiful and exotic places she has been fortunate to visit during her life. Her art is currently on display in Europe, Canada and the United States.
She seeks to paint the essence of a song – from rock, blues and soul to classical and opera—however, rock music tends to inspire her creativity. Beautiful, soulful lyrics remind her of moments in time, perhaps of the azure blue waters of the Bosporus in Istanbul, the colorful and fragrant summers of Vancouver, British Columbia, or the beautiful beaches of Southern California.
This juxtaposition of music, art and memories can be experienced in her paintings, “Cry Me a River” reflecting the heartfelt song by Joe Cocker and memories of a past love. “Falling in Love with You” another of Jan’s paintings reflects lyrics made famous by Alicia Keys.
Jan’s expansive surfaces command the attention of passers-by, reward the focus of new as well as seasoned collectors and magically transform a space.
Early in her adult life growing up in Vancouver Canada Jan was taught by several artists using a variety of mediums. Oils, acrylics, stained glass, collage; however in 2005 her life and her art took on a new form a freedom of expression and emotion when she moved to Southern California. Jan continues to draw inspiration from great artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Jean Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Frank Stella to name a few.
A Southern California resident for more than 13 years, she joined a group of artists in San Diego, where a talented teacher and mentor encouraged her to paint with uninhibited freedom and color leveraging a special glazing technique as well as collage and coloring. Jan was two time recipient of First Prize for 2D mixed media at the Beverly Hills Art Show, and has exhibited her colorful art internationally.
Jan paints on wood panels made by her husband out of Baltic Birch with Douglas fir frames. The wood – rather than canvas – allows her to scratch and draw into the wood giving more depth and meaning to the painting.
Jan’s original abstract art paintings and mixed media assemblages have been exhibited in Aspen, Austin, Beverly Hills, Brussels, Carmel, Laguna Beach, Los Angeles, Los Gatos, San Diego, Scottsdale, as well as private collectors’ homes and commercial properties.

DESCRIPTIVES OF ART
Inspiration
We all have memories of someone and maybe a special place from the past. Music evokes these memories. Music brings us back to moments in time. Our memories can bring joy, laughter maybe sadness but it gives us moments to reflect on the amazing gift of life. Often, likenesses will appear in our dreams as in these paintings. To capture this and bring depth and emotion forward in each painting I will use approximately 30 or more layers of paint and various media such as glazed cardboard, graphite and oil pastel unique papers on each panel. To achieve my goal of revitalizing a story of the past by adding more depth of color and texture.
As a great lover of rock and roll, blues, soul and most music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, I feel compelled to paint a statement of my love of the great musicians and song writers such as Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, John Denver, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and so many more
There is nothing like having the freedom to turn the volume up and let the paint brush fly across the canvas letting the spirits guide me. As they say, “music soothes the soul”.
Music moves me and guides me through. The use of many variants of bright shapes, colors, textures and text allows a freedom of expression.
