Awakening

"All of the paintings in my current collections are intuitive paintings, meaning that I don't use one specific reference photo for any of my works. I start with one inspiration and then build the composition piece by piece, almost in a collage-like fashion (responding to color, texture, and subject) until the painting 'becomes itself'. My land and seascapes are not geographically specific- they are an amalgamation of forms and topographies that emerge from my subconscious. This often lends to the creation of both realist and surrealist qualities, creating secondary contradictions or illusions in figure, form, and atmosphere. I've refined this process over time so that the 'surprises' in the paintings are often subtle, and typically not noticed until closer investigation. Working this way has pushed both my academic and creative process in a way that makes each painting not only a personal revelation but also entirely unique and impossible to replicate." ~Stefanie Bales
