Artwork Story
"Having always been fascinated with apes, my husband and I had the privilege of observing mountain gorillas in the wild in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda in 2014. We met silverback Agasha and his family on the first day and as I shared quick glances with some of the primates, I knew instantly how intelligent they are and felt as if I was looking into the eyes of another human being. During one of the most thrilling experiences of my life, we grunted and moaned, as taught by our guide, in response to Agasha’s vocalization asking if we were friendly. He put on quite a show, posing and posturing for us and when he decided it was time to change locations, we followed, and that is where I found him sitting in a sling of vines completely enjoying himself while feasting on leaves. That is when I snapped this very memorable moment of him emoting a calm, peaceful, meditative state. I feel this image truly exemplifies their gentle giant quality. In reflecting on how brave Dian Fossey was to ultimately sacrifice her life and single-handedly save their species, she is a true hero. I hope to return there someday soon." ~ Aubrey Ashburn
