“My artwork is inspired by nature and its power to heal. The smell of pine, the sounds of ocean swells, the colors of sunset. All these senses bring tranquility unmatched by any other source. Nature’s ability to rejuvenate our spirit, which is consistently being tapped by hectic, modern life, is remarkable. The places I’ve experienced rescued me when I was lost in the mundane. It brought me back to myself, unveiled the essence of my being, and all at once, revealed my purpose. Giving that gift of healing through art, is why I represent nature in oils. My work’s purpose is to serve as a channel for self-care for those with unreliable outlets and access to nature. When people see my art, I hope it’s a transforming experience; that they’re swept away into the painting and feel the beauty of the environment represented. As if they’re standing at the ocean’s edge, during a sunset, feeling warmth and color wrap around them. To tap their emotional wells and lighten the weight they carry. By applying thick oil paint with palette knives, mimics the textures in nature. The freedom of painting in impressionism transfers my emotions into each piece as I paint, giving my work its own life and vibration, profoundly understood and felt by those who visit my works.” ~Eryn Tehan
Eryn Tehan was raised in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. She is best known for her modern, impressionist paintings with bold palette knife textures, and thick applications of intensely colorful oil paint. Her deep connection to the natural world, passion for exploration and sharing experiences, inspires her work.
Wielding only palette knives, Eryn creates chunky, visible thickness, adding to her unique style. One of the goals in her paintings, is to spotlight hidden colors in flora, creating powerful emotional responses and new ways of seeing and experiencing natural beauty.
A painter for only a few short years, she has quickly expanded her career. Of note, she has shown work at Ford Gallery, Alberta Street Gallery, The Lakewood Center for the Arts, The Oregon Society of Artists, 510 Museum, CHP Galleries, and has worked with The Chelsea Hicks Foundation, Step It Up PDX, and The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines. Her work is held in private collections across the United States.
Adelman Fine Art is pleased to represent Eryn Tehan and share her talent with collectors worldwide.
Q & A INTERVIEW
AFA: What was your first job?
ET: “I got my first job when I was 17 for the summer as a cashier at Target. When I went back to school in the fall, I would quit, and they’d let me come back every summer, well into college. It was generous how flexible they were, and I felt so fulfilled as a young lady making my own income. It’s also how I met my partner of 12 years!”
AFA: If you had your own talk show, who would be the first three guests?
ET: “For my own talk show, I would love to feature Robert Gamblin the developer of Gamblin paints and mediums, and his wife Catherine. Robert and Catherine are incredible artists, and I use Gamblin paints and mediums every day, in every painting I create. I’d love the opportunity to talk to them both about what’s next for the company and what they’re working on next. For my next show I’d love to feature the creator and owner of VantaBlack, Anish Kapoor, and for my last guest, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”
AFA: What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
ET: “Coffee! I love, love coffee. Then, painting! When the idea of painting comes at me, it hits me like a wave of excitement and thrill, and I can’t wait to get to work.”
AFA: You have to wear a t-shirt with one word on it for one year. Which word do you choose?
AFA: Do you collect anything?
ET: “Yes! I collect art I love. I think it’s so important for artists to support other artists and to have original art hanging in your home. It brings life, a conversation and unique stories into a space. I also collect coffee mugs from my travels! I like to think of the places I’ve been when I have my coffee. It helps to inspire me all over again!”
About The Art:
AFA: What is your favorite content to paint?
ET: “Sunsets by the sea are by far my favorite content to paint. The colors, the movement of the ocean and sky, have such a wild, positive intensity, that breathes beautiful energy into a painting.”
AFA: What is the best advice you’ve received in regards to your art?
ET: “The best advice I’ve received is, just keep painting, and everything else will fall into place.”
AFA: Who are your artist inspirations?
ET: “My main artist inspirations are Erin Hanson, Van Gogh, and my artist friends. As my career grows, I meet some amazing women, some of which, along the way, have become my close friends and I think those people are the ones who inspire me the most.”
AFA: What appeals to you about using a palette knife?
ET: “Painting with a palette knife gives me such freedom! When I used brushes, I would focus in on details. But I found my style, while extremely realistic, was stiff and not unique to me. When I started using palette knives, I began letting go and loosening my style. In one quick stroke, I could make dramatic, striking clouds, or waves. The feeling of painting with a knife is incredible. It’s so full of emotion and movement. I also love the texture it creates, especially with using bright and saturated colors.”
AFA: Tell us about your first opening night at Adelman Fine Art.
ET: “The first opening night I had at Adelman, was Music as Muse III. It was my first time in California, and I walked in, having never met anyone at the gallery yet. I was met with such overwhelming enthusiasm and grace. The genuine warmth was wonderfully overwhelming! All the artists there were equally welcoming and supportive. My favorite part was the cheering and congratulating when anyone sold a piece of art and that the collectors were so moved by the art, they had tears in their eyes. It was beautiful to watch such joy unfold.”
