Brian Hebets is a Marine Artist, born and raised in San Diego, California. Ever since he was a kid; he grew up in the 90’s graffiti era and studied everything from landscapes, animals and cinematography. All of which are the roots to his body of work. On top of studying Fine Art for over 25 years, he also has a degree in Media Arts and Animation from the Art Institute of San Diego where he studied Visual Effects for film.

He’s exhibited work in galleries throughout Southern California and all the way to Art basel in Miami. Teamed up with Non-profit organizations such as Pangeaseed Foundation’s Seawalls: Murals for Oceans, Surfrider Foundation and Cohort Collective painting large scale murals depicting today’s Environmental and Marine life issues.

“The Ocean is my Church. It provides me with the best opportunities to further study the fruits of Mother Nature up close and personal: lighting, colors, elements and marine life in their natural habitat. While I’m visually gaining knowledge and experiences from being offshore, it helps me drive the creative engine to further enhance and transfer that raw energy into my work.”

-Brian Hebets

Adelman Fine Art is pleased to represent Brian Hebets and share his talent with collectors worldwide.

Q & A INTERVIEW

Icebreakers:

AFA: What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done for fun?

BH: “Scariest thing I’ve done for fun would have to be a tie between Sky diving and handling a pissed off Mako Shark I just caught (catch & release) trying to get the hook out. You got to respect their power and strength, even as a pup. I was surprised. One bite in the right spot and it could be game over for you when you’re 70 miles out on the water. Be super cautious!”

AFA: What is in the trunk of your car right now?

BH: “I’m a truck kind of guy lol. I keep a large cooler for fish/ tailgates along with a crate full of tie downs and rope.”

AFA: What is your theme song?

BH: “So many genre’s and classics to choose from out there but I’ll take Eminem- Til I collapse.”

AFA: If you had to be handcuffed to one famous person for an entire month, who would it be and why?

BH: “Todd McFarlane- Not only because he’s an artist and the creator of SPAWN, but he has a world of knowledge when it comes to the business side of art. There’s a lot to learn from seasoned veterans like him in the art world.”

AFA: If you were the eighth dwarf, what would your name be?

BH: “Hungry, because I’ve got a big appetite.”

About The Art:

AFA: What inspired you to mix grafiti and realisim with some of your paintings?

BH: “I really enjoy the balance of energy when both elements come together on canvas. With all the spray paint, textures and colors that are used, it helps generate that raw beauty I would see walking the streets looking at graffiti. Mix in a photo-real shark on top of that with the right lighting and composition. You got yourself a pretty well balanced piece.”

AFA: What is your favorite marine animal to paint?

BH: “Hands down, The Great White shark. No other animal on the planet strikes the fear of God in a human being the way a shark does. You’re in the water, It’s not like you can run or hide. They decide what to do with you, not the other way around. That’s scary to me…but…I can’t wait to dive with them lol.”

AFA: Who are your artist influencers?

BH: “My early influencers were Bob Ross, HR. Giger and Wyland. Each taught me a lot in their own ways. Today’s artists would have to be Layne Johnson and Tristan Eaton.”

AFA: We love your variety when it comes to painting styles/techniques! Out of all your artwork styles, which is your favorite to paint?

BH: “Oh man that’s tough haha. I tend to rotate them out because I don’t want to get bored doing the same thing over and over. If I had to pick one I’d say realism over the rest. The process is much slower but the challenges are more rewarding. There’s more layers to it which allows your piece time to naturally grow on its own and morph into something beautiful.”

AFA: A big part of your art career is doing oversized murals. What is your biggest mural to date and where is it located?

BH: “I absolutely love painting large scale murals. Go big or go home! My biggest one yet is “Sink or Swim” located at Grossmont High School over by their pool area. The wall is 35′ x 110′ and took me 12 days to complete. A bucket list goal of mine is to set the Guiness world record for the biggest mural by solo artist…we’ll see how that goes lol.”
